Christmas is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year. A circle of the closest people, deep-rooted traditions and a rich festive table are associated with warm and wonderful feelings for many people. Christmas is unimaginable without a Christmas tree, of course! However, this has not always been the case. When Lithuania belonged to the Soviet Union, it was not allowed to celebrate Christmas officially, thus the term “Christmas tree” was not used. Attempts were made to replace it with “a New Year's tree” term.
During the Soviet era, the tradition of decorating Christmas trees spread in the cities, just Christmas trees were no longer Christmas trees, but New Year's Eve trees. Such festive trees began to appear in the main squares of many cities. Trees were often decorated during Christmas Eve, but the religious meaning of this celebration and this symbol was sought to be denied.
When Lithuania was seeking to regain independence from the Soviet Union, changes took place in various fields, and one of them was music field. In 1988 the band Kardiofonas, led by Rimantas Giedraitis, released a song called "Christmas Tree" („Kalėdinė eglutė“). This song became one of the symbols of the Christmas tree return. The record of this music group, which contributed to the events of change in Lithuania, is exhibited in the exposition "TIME OF CHANGES: Theater, Music, Cinema and Art 1985-1995"!, arranged by The Centre for Civil Education and the Lithuanian Theater, Music and Film Museum.
